Apple iPhone 15 Pro Review: The Flagship Phone To Lure Android Users To iOS – Forbes

Introduction Apple iPhone 15 Pro Review

I’m almost ashamed to admit that I have never had much experience with Apple products or the iOS ecosystem. Sure, I’ve tapped the occasional Spotify playlist or texted on behalf of a friend while she’s driving, but never have I used an iPhone as my main device for any stretch of time. That all changed last month when I got to spend a few weeks with the iPhone 15 Pro, one of Apple’s newest—and, in my opinion, most intriguing—smartphones. So while most iPhone reviews are written by people who are already iPhone users, here’s a different take: I’m going to evaluate the iPhone 15 Pro as a daily Android user.

I worried it might be difficult to transition from Android to iPhone. While I struggled initially with the differences in the OS, once I grew accustomed to the new system (particularly the lack of a back swipe), I found the iPhone 15 Pro has many great features, from its built-in ray tracing for mobile gaming to multiple lenses for capturing images to a speedy chipset to keep your multitasking running smoothly. If you’re coming from Android, while you should give yourself some time to adjust to the new ecosystem, but the iPhone 15 Pro is a great device to switch to. Read on for my thoughts on design, performance and more.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Design

Gorgeous And Practical

The iPhone 15 Pro’s design is a significant and welcome change, especially for someone like me who is a long-time Android user. I’m used to the bulk and thickness of Android devices like the Pixel 6 Pro or even the latest Google smartphone I tested, the Pixel 8.

In contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro is small, thin and fits comfortably in your hand. I could feel the difference in just how thin this device is. For context, the Google Pixel 8 is 0.4-inches in depth whereas the 15 Pro knocks that number down to just over 0.3-inches. It’s slightly heavier than the Google Pixel 8, but there’s a tradeoff there in terms of processing and camera power. More on that later.

On the back, you’ll find the usual iPhone camera lineup, including a 48 megapixel lens, a 12 megapixel ultrawide that includes a telephoto with 3X optical zoom. The finish also features a new titanium casing. It’s pretty snazzy—and that sturdy titanium casing is one of my favorite parts about the design. You can opt to put the phone in a case, but I didn’t feel I needed one; odds are that it’s going to require a lot of drops and scrapes before it takes any physical damage. How do I know? I’ve definitely dropped it a few times.

And of course, one of the biggest changes is the new USB-C charge port. All I can say is: Finally. The Thunderbolt port was one of the reasons I always reached for Android. After all, I have so many USB-C charging cables in my house that even the prospect of adopting an Apple-only cable stressed me out. Sure, I could wirelessly charge, but my home setup is designed with cables in mind. It’s really nice to be able to plug the Pro into any of my USB-C cables and get a quick charge when I need one.

Of course, I’m not trying to dismiss the concerns of longtime iPhone users who have a house filled with Lightning cables and accessories. My perspective is that of an Android user who’s switching to the iPhone 15 Pro, so I’m used to USB-C. I can imagine some folks will feel some frustration, but Apple includes a USB-C charging cable in the box, and USB-C is the most common kind of cable around today. It’s the right move.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Display

Looks Great—And Hasn’t Changed

The Apple iPhone 15 Pro features a 120Hz, adaptive refresh rate AMOLED display, similar to most high-end performers on the market. Nothing has changed from the iPhone 14 Pro. It still features a 460ppi with True Tone, Haptic Touch, and Wide Color (P3). Apple has found something that works well for the display, bringing bright and crisp colors to the screen.

Coming from an Android, I was pleasantly surprised how useful I found the Always On Display, making it easy to check the time or check the Dynamic Island display for updates on my Uber rides or any soccer updates. I’ve never used an Always On Display on my Android devices, and being able to glance over and check the time without pressing the power button or quickly glance at notifications while I’m typing this review was really beneficial to me.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Performance

Designed With Mobile Gaming In Mind

Full disclosure here: iOS 17 took some getting used to. When I went to my local cell store to activate the eSIM card, the clerk told me to give it two weeks. Naively, I shrugged him off. As I learned (the hard way), the clerk was right; it took around two weeks to to get used to iOS.

One of the largest changes for me was that Apple doesn’t have a back swipe feature—something I find second nature on my Pixel 6 Pro and have used even on my Samsung Z Flip 5. I really, truly missed my back swipe button on the iPhone. Apple deserves some credit, as there is always a back button on the screen to help me go to the previous screen, and I could also swipe up to return to the main home display. Most of the learning curve I mentioned boiled down to missing my beloved back swipe. However, once I got used to finding the back button on-screen, I could navigate my favorite apps. In future iPhone software updates, I’d love to see this option come to the ecosystem. I personally find it to be crucial when I’m multitasking between different apps.

During my testing, the iPhone 15 Pro’s new A17 Pro chip felt fast when it came to swapping through apps and multitasking. Not once did it stutter—something I appreciated as I was navigating New York City streets and subway stations while listening to music and messaging my friends. Heck, even doing some light mobile gaming on the device felt easy and smooth. While I obviously couldn’t test Assassin’s Creed Mirage, I’ll be curious to see how that performs once it comes to the iPhone 15 Pro.

And, as a mobile gamer, the ray-tracing on this device looked stellar. During some demos, I enjoyed the realistic colors and more detailed graphics on the iPhone. In practice, it’s gorgeous. Mobile gamers who don’t want the bulk of the Pro Max, which jumps from the Pro’s 6.1-inches to 6.7, will enjoy gaming on this device (and, if you haven’t already, I strongly recommend picking up a Backbone controller for your gaming, as the USB-C model has been designed with the 15 series in mind).

The iPhone 15 Pro gave me a lot of easy and useful updates, including NameDrop, which made it easy for me to add contacts to my phone when I do my rounds at PR events. I also greatly enjoyed personalizing my contact information and being able to create fun stickers using photos I took. Being able to make silly stickers of my kitten at home isn’t something I’d normally consider a requirement for my mobile device, but the iPhone 15 Pro’s software makes it fun to be on my mobile device. It’s these little features on the iOS software that made my experience on the iPhone downright fun to message my friends and family.

iPhone 15 Pro Camera

Great Low Light Images

The cameras on the Pro wowed me. I’m one of those folks who love to adjust the settings once I’ve snapped the image—altering exposure, temperature and more so I can get that perfect look to share with my family or partner. The 48MP lens with a ƒ/1.78 aperture captures images beautifully of my cats and around New York City. I found it easy to point and snap images, including in low light settings with Night mode.

I’m also notorious for capturing my cats playing so I can share these videos with my family. In capturing video on the 15 Pro, the 4K video felt smooth and automatically adjusted the lighting to compliment low evening light or bright afternoon sun. Apple has shown videos in the past where directors filmed full scenes on these devices. Initially, I was a skeptic; based on my testing, I can now see why and how Apple iPhones could film as well as they did. The camera technology in the Pro I felt was really powerful. Between this and that more ergonomic, smaller design I really enjoyed, I could easily see myself using this as my main device moving forward.

iPhone 15 Pro Battery Life

All-Day Battery Life, Plus Some Extra

Throughout my testing, I admittedly forgot to place the iPhone 15 Pro on its charging stand when I went to bed. When I’d wake up in the morning, I’d panic, thinking I wouldn’t have enough juice to get through the day, especially when heading into the city.

My fears were unwarranted; the 15 Pro’s battery supports up to 23 hours of video playback (20 when streamed). Obviously, I’m not watching Lord of the Rings marathons with this device (though tempting), but when tucked into my pocket, I wasn’t worried about my battery life compared to my Android devices while moving around New York City. It’s a win-win when I can head into the city without charging the Pro and still have enough juice to make calls, message friends and more when I arrive at home.

iPhone 15 Pro Verdict

A Great Value Pick

If you’re coming from an Android device like I did, odds are you’re going to be a little jarred entering the world of iOS. It’s okay to feel a little surprised by the new software changes, but the good news is they’re easy to adjust to. It’s worth swapping to the iPhone 15 Pro, as it has features and a solid camera system that make it a great value mobile device. It’s not as pricy as its sibling, the Pro Max, but still offers powerful cameras, an impressive battery life and an easy-to-use ecosystem.

While iPhone fans will be fine springing for this device, it’s also ideal for those that want to dip their toes into the world of iPhone and check out how it compares to Android. Coming from personal experience that for the specs and the price, the iPhone 15 is now one of my picks for value for the price.

My Expertise

I’ve been a consumer tech & electronics writer and editor for over four years, and I’ve covered everything from Apple iPhone launches to full reviews of mobile devices including the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. As the consumer and electronics editor at Forbes, I’ve covered major phone launches including Apple and Google for the past two years, including at other publications. My reporting on phones includes reviews in Decider, as well as major announcements at Digital Trends and most recently ZDNET.

How I Tested The Apple iPhone 15 Pro

I used the Apple iPhone 15 Pro as my main device for the past two weeks, taking it on around New York City to capture photos, message friends, make calls, check weather, navigate the subway system and much more. I ran multiple apps across the device while capturing video for friends and family. I even pulled up mobile games to test Apple’s built-in ray tracing.

For the camera, I tested it across urban settings, portrait shots, many different cat subjects at home and more. I used it in bright sunlit areas and night shots to see how each turned out. The camera saw action both indoors and outside to see how still life and action shots turned out under various circumstances, and the same went for video to share with friends and family. Additionally, I cross-tested it with Google’s camera system to find out how the camera held up against the competition.

Complete Review of the Air Jordan 1 Low

Introduction of Air Jordan 1 Low

The Air Jordan 1 Low is a timeless classic in the sneaker world, offering a versatile style that caters to both casual wearers and sneaker enthusiasts. In this review, we’ll delve into the history, design, performance, and overall value of the Air Jordan 1 Low.

History

The Air Jordan 1 was the first signature shoe for Michael Jordan, designed by Peter Moore. It broke the mold with its bold colors and innovative design, which quickly made it a cultural phenomenon. The low-cut version emerged as a more casual option, suitable for everyday wear while retaining the essence of the original high-top model.

  • Upper: The upper is typically crafted from a mix of premium leather and synthetic materials, providing durability and a sleek look.

  • Comfort: A padded collar and cushioned insole ensure comfort, making it suitable for long wear.

Performance

While the Air Jordan 1 Low is primarily a lifestyle sneaker, it does not compromise on performance. Key aspects include:

  • Traction: The rubber outsole features a classic tread pattern, offering reliable traction on various surfaces.
  • Support: The shoe provides decent arch support and a secure fit, thanks to its lace-up closure system.
  • Versatility: Whether you’re hitting the streets or the court, the Jordan 1 Low performs admirably, though it’s best suited for casual use rather than intense athletic activity.

  • Versatility: Suitable for various occasions, from casual outings to semi-formal events.
  • Comfort: With its cushioned insole and padded collar, the shoe offers great comfort for all-day wear.
  • Durability: High-quality materials ensure the sneaker’s longevity.
